Imaginations The Last City of Men 1 eBook Tara Brown

This book blew me away. I read SO many books every year, and often grab from the YA shelf because YA tends to write a lot of time travel/dystopia/alternate reality a lot more than "adult" writers do. I had this book and its sequel sitting in my Kindle for over a year before I started reading it this week, and Oh My Word, if I had known how good they were I would never have waited so long. I could not put these 2 books down. I was reading them in the kitchen while cooking supper, at work in between projects, and in bed long after I should have gone to sleep. The story was incredible, all the twists and turns absolutely riveting. And if you think it ended good, and you don't want to read book #2, you are insane, because book #2 is even crazier. It opens with a bang and upsets the entire love triangle. I am way too old too be freaking out about a young adult dystopian love story this way but seriously, so good.

Imaginations The Last City of Men 1 eBook Tara Brown Reviews

I'd started reading Imaginations, thinking book 2 was already out. After I was 1/2 way through the book, I checked and saw Duplicity wasn't out. I decided I'd wait for the 2nd book to come out before finishing Imaginations, and ended up reading the whole thing again-from beginning to end-and was fascinated, disgusted, sad, full of disbelief, wondering what would happen next, and very thankful I had the next book ready to read.

Imaginations is a wild ride. People live in "The Last City of Men". I won't comment to much on the name of the city, read the book and you'll see why. Basically, there's some technology that, when you go to bed at night, all of your memories of the previous day are (or at least ought to be) wiped from your mind so that the following morning really IS a new day. The main character, Gwyn, soon finds out that there's a lot more to the city than she could have ever imagined. A dark side. An evil side. This book follows her journey in self discovery, as well as her journey for the truth and justice. It was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it so much!! Great dystopian fiction at it's finest!

I highly recommend this book to readers ages 15-173. It's a fascinating world you'll enter, with both beauty and darkness within. Enjoy! I'm off to read the 2nd and final book in this series!!
I thought this book --and Tara Brown's version of a nightmarish future world--was excellent. I haven't liked all of her books, "The Lonely" and the "Born" series not being favorites of mine. But she has terrific writing skills, world building capability, and the ability to help us feel the mixed emotions her characters are feeling, and I respect that. She's a powerful writer, using well planned plots, (unlike other Y.A. series writers I tend to dismiss as frivolous). This author creates more in-depth stories than most in this genre. But she still moves her stories forward at a decent pace, while still holding the readers' interest.

PLEASE NOTE A VERY IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "IMAGINATIONS" AND OTHER DYSTOPIAN BOOKS There is some ridiculous complaint that this book is an imitation of "The Giver", which is Hogwash! The very first dystopian novels of great worth were written by Aldous Huxley ("Brave New World"-1932) and Ray Bradbury ("Farenheit 451"-1950), and they are literary classics. "Brave New World" is still required secondary school reading. George Orwell's earlier work, "1984", doesn't entirely fit into this category, because the people of that bleak world were simply all terrorized, and controlled by a Tyrannical government, and mindwashed into hating non existant enemies. All of these novels were brilliant, and set a precedent for presenting us with pictures of disturbing futures where humans are genetically engineered, and/or whose minds are controlled by drugs and other methods, so they're cooperative and complacent. (The "Hunger Games" isn't the same type of story, but it too is a brilliant series). There's no reason they can't all exist together and be appreciated for each writer's particular skills.

"The Giver" was written much later, and is considered a grade-school level book. It was a terrific book, and also became a classic. More importantly If any other author attempts to portray this type of story, it's well within their rights, especially if the job is well done. Notably, none of these books feature a courageous lead character like Gwyn, who matures leader, and becomes someone capable of making some amazing final decisions.

This book is worth reading. It's not an epic, mind-blowing novel like "Brave New World" (an intellectually lofty book meant for adults). But it shines like a beacon above a crowd of mediocre Y.A. "dystopian" stories, and Tara Brown's writing style is mature and striking.
I liked the book as a whole which is why I gave it 4 stars - it didn't receive the full 5 for a few reasons. One, it felt sort of rushed to me - there could have been a lot more character development (and I felt like it was really needed with the main character who went from someone without a thought in her head to someone who could kill without any training in a space of a month). There were also things that were glaringly left unanswered, like why did Gwyn tell Amber she only had to worry about resetting for another three months? That was never explained and it didn't make sense with people there clearly longer than three months but still resetting. Another problem for me was the ending - it totally felt rushed and confusing. Not sure if I'm going to pick up book #2 or not and for me that's a big sign that something was missing to me if I don't automatically go into the book series.
