Fly Away A Novel Kristin Hannah 9780312577216 Books

This was the most depressing book that I have read in a very long. I've read several other books by this author and they have been a somewhat more enjoyable read. The female characters' personality traits were frustrating me so greatly that I skipped over most of the text. None were very adept at communicating or willing to share their feelings.. Too much "I am sorry" for my taste. Nor did they "see the light" until they had all but self-destroyed. The retelling of the same events was more than I could handle. Oh, and the detailed clinical descriptions of the injuries of one of the characters was more than the average person needs to learn.

Fly Away A Novel Kristin Hannah 9780312577216 Books Reviews

It was my first book from Kristin Hannah. I didn't know it was a sequel, it was a great independent read as well. I read all the poor reviews, they seemed to have one thing in common, wanting to have a 'happy' read only. Because I don't have any previous experience from this author, I can tell you that it's honest, raw, but most of all real. It deals with real life tragedies as cancer, death and the tragic aftermath.

I don't think it's depressing. It's REAL. Depression, addiction and hard life lessons are part of a journey for these characters. I think Kristin Hannah walks you through painful losses, lessons and you get to see the character's growth and perseverance in the end. Don't get discourage, it's a great read.
I haven't read a single novel of Kristin's that hasn't captured me wholeheartedly, and that includes this one. I found this sequel to the story of Tully and Kate by happy accident after buying several of her books because of how much I enjoyed the first. I'm so glad I did. I hadn't felt the need for a continuation until I began this book. I thought the first ended so well, it didn't feel unfinished. If you loved Firefly Lane, pick this up and give it a read. You won't be sorry.
I began this review by giving it 3 stars, but once I wrote everything I felt I had to bump it up to 4 stars because I think my complaints are personal due to extreme attachment to the characters - which shows just what a brilliant writer Kristin Hannah is.

I love Kristin Hannah's writing. She is amazing. Her characters are so well developed and the stories just make you feel so many emotions. This three star rating is purely personal. This is the sequel to "Firefly Lane," my all-time favorite book. I fell in love with the characters and the story was brilliant. "Fly Away" sadly pales in comparison. Kate was my favorite Firefly Lane character but Tully always bugged me, so for those of you who read that book, you can understand why Fly Away was not as good to me. The themes were also much darker and the characters just acted in ways that bothered me. Not bothered me morally or anything, just in ways that did not seem fitting to the characters. Plus, again, I identified so well with Kate that the plot of Fly Away bothered me because of how I knew it would affect Kate. That in itself is a testament to the wonderful writing quality.

That said, the characters had their own emotional journey to go on and Kristin Hannah does a fantastic job of describing that journey. The downside was that the end was predictable, but not in a way that was a total turn off. I think the ending was obvious to everyone but the characters themselves, which is probably true to human nature in general.

The book delves further into Tully and Dorothy/Cloud's past, which I thought was really interesting. You also learn about Marah. I wished there was more from Johnny's perspective, but that's because I love his character. The story wasn't really about him.
Another excellent book written by Kristen Hannah! In typical fashion for me, I read this book in 2 days. At first it was hard to follow and a bit confusing and I wasn't crazy about the redundancy. That being said, as I read on, I got it and realized why it was written the way it was. I just love the characters in this book, which is a part two to Firefly Lane. You definitely don't need to read Firefly first to understand what is going on as the two books stand alone. Can't wait to read my next Hannah novel! They are addicting.

I will say that the book deals with addiction, domestic violence, sexual abuse and tragedy and how one overcomes such challenges.
This is a good read; however, by the time I neared the end I was ready for it to be over. When read in succession with book #1, the overall tone is really depressing. The stories can't be anything but depressing, I get that, but still... I need to read something funny now to balance it out. This author is a master at tapping emotions, so I can always be sure when I pick up one of her books that it's going to suck me in to the story.
I loved the first book, but this sequel was a disappointment. My main complaint is that the entire first half of the book was depressing. We understand that losing the central person in our life is hard to overcome; it doesn't need to be drilled into us for an entire first half of the book. She could have laid this groundwork in the first 50-75 pages and it would have been just as effective, and a better story because she could spend the rest of the book exploring how the characters overcome their deep losses. This author is good at this, but didn't give us enough of it in this book. The only reason I made it to the 2nd half, which was more interesting because more complex character development actually happened, is because the author writes in a simple way which makes it a quick read. Whereas I have recommended Firefly Lane to a few friends, I would not recommend this sequel.
I loved Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale. Gave copies to everyone I know...it was my gift to the world that year. The story is brilliantly told, the strength and courage and discipline the sisters were made of was powerful and beautiful.
I can't find anything to say about Fly Away. For me it was pages about nothing. I finished the book yesterday and already the characters names are forgotten.
Perhaps this genre is written for a different type reader.
