Crescent Moon Nightcreature Book 4 Lori Handeland 9780312938482 Books

There is nothing better than discovering that a "new to you" author has written many books. After reading a series of romance duds, what a thrill it was to Crescent Moon on my ereader. It was a treat to read about interesting characters and actually get caught up in the plot.

Diana is an unusual heroine -- scientist, widow and an athletic 5'10" and 160 pounds. At 30 years old, she is alone in the world having been estranged from her family.

"The detective's stoic glare probably worked on most people, but not on me. Eighteen years with my mother was finally proving good for something."

Diana is on a paranormal wild goose chase outside New Orleans trying to salvage her dead husband's reputation.

“New Orleans is the most haunted city in America, and there’s a reason for it.” “Ghosts?”
“Booze, drugs, loud music.” He headed for the door. “Messes with the head.”

Adam is the mysterious alpha male with a tragic past. There is some great sexual tension and the supporting characters are interesting. This is not one of those novels where there are a bunch of extra characters stuffed in randomly for future books.

Although fourth in this series, the novel is definitely a standalone. Having accidentally started at book 4, I am delighted to go back and read the other novels in this series and see what else Ms. Handeland has written.

Crescent Moon Nightcreature Book 4 Lori Handeland 9780312938482 Books Reviews

This is the 4th book by Ms. Handeland in the Nightcreature series. I devoured the 3 preceding books just the same as this one. I debated giving this book 4 or 5 stars. It seemed a little better than 4, being not as good as the other books written before it.

This novel is set in New Orleans (with a note from the author that this was written before Katrina), the sultry and mysterious, yet elegant city of the South. Diana Malone is a cryptozoologist (a scientist who looks for Bigfoot, Nessie, and the like) with a tattered reputation. She is sent to Louisiana to investigate sightings of wolves and werewolves near the Crescent City. She meets Adam Ruelle there and the attraction is intense and immediate.

Just as each of the first three novels can stand alone, so can this one. They do not have to be read in sequence in my opinion. They are tied together by the Jager-Suchers and Edward Mandenauer more than by having the same characters in each book.

Voodoo plays a part in this book, but considering that it happens in Louisiana, I'd be more shocked if it wasn't included.
Diana is out to prove that her husband was telling the truth about werewolves. She is hired to go to New Orleans. There have been sightings of wolves. There should be no wolves in New Orleans, because they went extinct from there years ago. She is in New Orleans when she comes across a man that makes her feel things she shouldn't. His name is Adam. He makes love with her and disappears into the woods. She starts to think he may be a werewolf. She follows him one night into the woods. She comes across his home and finds out that he has a son. Adam doesn't want Diana to be around his son. The son likes her , escapes from home to be with her. The boy and Diana are sleepy. The boy falls asleep and Diana is about to fall asleep when she looks up and sees Adam. Adam takes the boy home and tells her to stay away from them. She decides to trap the werewolf to find out if he can turn into a werewolf. She lures the werewolf to the cage but he refuses to go in. He looks around and spots her sitting on a stand and lunges at her. She fires a tranquilizer into him and then puts him in the cage and waits. He changes into a human and she believes its the man she has had sex with. She leaves him in the cage and goes to get the boy to take him with her. The father----Adam stops her. She can't believe he got loose. He takes her back to the cage and the human she trapped is still there. He's Adam's grandfather. They release him because Adam can't see his grandfather destroyed. If he's killed, then Adam becomes the monster. The grandfather is holding the boy hostage when Diana comes back to the home. He tells Diana that he wants to see if by having sex with her if he will be cured. He believes that Diana is a goddess. She calls him crazy and he tries to kill her. Adam saves her. The grandfather is taken to another country that people are trying to cure the ones they can, and killing the ones they can't. Diana goes back to her husband's gravesite to say goodbye. Adam shows up. He wants to be with her. He also tells her that the people that have his grandfather wants them to work for them. She locates the paranormal and he kills them if there's no hope. She agrees if they get married. She wants to be able to take care of the boy if something happens to him. Good story.
This book......it was all over the place. An erotic paranormal romance crossed with the snark of an urban fantasy. Sounds good, right? Wasn't.

The heroine was snarky, especially when talking about those heroines who make too stupid to live decisions. As if she wasn't one. Hello? Go into the swamp at night without a gun? Chase a strange man into the swamp? And so on and so on.

The hero? Well, he never did anything except show up for the hot sex scenes. Seriously. Hardly said two words. Never got to see him in action until the last few pages of the story. He was part of the mystery. So ok, let's add spooky gothic romance to the mix. As that's who our hero was, straight out of a gothic romance and you had no idea if he was good or evil but you know you're reading a romance so chances are he's going to be ok but for god sakes act like it once in a while! Whew. That run on sentence was how this book went for me.

She meets the perfect ally in the world and makes a new bestie at the same time. Again, maybe just a little too easy. The perfect best friend who just happens to know answers to questions she doesn't know she has and how to use magic to get more!

And of course we have to throw a kid into the mix. I mean heck we have voodoo and werewolves and a gothic hero and a spooky old mansion and a mysterious benefactor so why not add scooby do and shaggy antics!

Oh I so cannot recommend this one. And I so wanted to love it when I read about it. So wanted to love this one.
