Fever Rising is an action packed dystopian novel that had me on the edge of my seat! The main character, Kaden, is a lovable giant with a good heart and plenty of brawn. The opening scene had me overcome with anticipation, and sets the tone for the rest of the book. Riley's writing style also appeals to me because it is smooth, yet radiant. And Cassidy Havok, well, let's just say she is the most resilient character I have come across. Her fearless attitude is enough to inspire even the most timid reader. She is sure to be a fan favorite (I know she is mine).

The author, K.M Riley, gave me the honor of beta reading the book, and I will say that it did not disappoint. Her talent and love for creative writing really stood out in this beautifully written novel. I was not surprised by this given that her Spirit Awakening series was superb as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an action packed thrill ride. Very well done!

This is an action fantasy set presumably on Earth some time in the long future, where a very few Lords (Sirdars) control the population in large cities through Wardens, while at the bottom there are some ordinary people who we don't see. The main sort of entertainment seems to be based on the Roman concept of gladiatorial fights, where teams can hack other teams to bits, and then fight each other. The story focuses mainly on two of these fighters. Fighters come in three classes because they have special powers, and when pumped full of chemicals, even more, such as the ability to heal extremely quickly, unless the strike causes death. The story mainly follows one, a champion (for a time) who eventually starts to question the system and, well you can probably guess but I won't spoil.
The story is well-written, and the action scenes prolonged and detailed, and thanks to this ability to heal quickly, serious blows don't stop the action. In many ways, it is written a bit in the style of a computer game, and it is very well done if you want this sort of thing. My major criticism is the story is a bit one-dimensional. The characters more or less do what their "type" does, there is no "life" outside the fighting, but as entertainment, don't let that distract you.
Fever Rising by K. M. Riley is a novel of a future society that has brought back the ancient barbarian rituals of forcing slaves to fight one another. Kaden is a slave. He is owned by a citizen who can make him do whatever he wants. When Kaden was very young, he was forced to watch as his father an mother were pitted against one another in a battle to the death for the amusement of the citizens. He watched his father kill his mother and then end his own life. That vision was seared into Kaden's mind. Years later, he is forced to fight his sister to the death. Remembering the fate of his father and his mother, he decides to save his sister and run. While fleeing, he comes in contact with Cassidy. Cassidy has been fighting against the rules of the government and sees hope in young Kaden. Together, they flee from the government control and the citizens into the Wild, a ruined place outside the control of their masters. In the Wild, they plan their attack and how they are going to being down the government and all the bloody rules that it stands for.
I really did like this book. It is action packed and moves at a steady pace. The only reason I marked it down to a 4 is because I feel like this genre is getting to be a bit overdone. I understand that there is a huge market for it but I was just hoping for a little more. With that, the author did a nice job of making this somewhat unique to the other novels in this genre that have come before it. It has the same feel of The Hunger Games, Divergent, or The Maze Runner but comes at the reader with a little more attitude and grown up feel. I think both young adult readers and adults will enjoy the book for its pacing and the action that comes with it.
Kaden lives in a dystopian society in which the few controlled the many and laid down the laws and the ways of living. Objections, unless hidden, were met with death. A Prime, who ran the Federacy and controlled the System governed overall; the individual self-sustaining regions were handled by Sirdars who virtually owned them and the people within. Their focus was profits and the current value of Caste members they owned. They used intrigue and an annual fighting event to expand their territory, and importance.
The society is highly hierarchical. The Citizenry were the well-to-do and owned property and assets. At the events, the Citizenry was separated from the Castes who sat below and obeyed– the Fighting Caste, the Merchant Caste, and the Serving Caste. The latter was forced to be present, were subdued and unable to speak out – not if they valued their lives. Everything outside the Federacy-sanctioned walls was the Wilds, where dwelled the Casteless.
For their events, the Sirdars trained and recognized fighters called Challengers. Victory meant possessions for the Sirdars, and for the Fighting Castes competing, another day under their Sirdar’s generosity. Fighters were Challengers – designated as Brawn; Adept; and Fury – each having different strengths - one to one fighter. ‘Twos’ were destroyed by the Sirdars or recruited to the Wilds, and ‘threes’ were seldom heard of. Kaden was Brawn; his sister, Nix, an Adept; and their eventual ally, Cassidy Havoc, a Trine (Brawn; Fury; and Adept).
We find Kaden reflecting on himself (like his parents) as property of the Citizenry. He is reluctant and thinks that he could refuse the life he trained for, abscond and live with the Casteless. But to him this would negate the value of his parents’ death. Kaden had witnessed his parents death - his father’s refusal to kill his wife when paired, and his self-inflicted death. Now he faces a similar situation with his sister, an Adept, in anticipation the at some time their Sirdars would pit them against each other.
It is in the above context that Kaden and Nix combat Cassidy. Cassidy’s mission was to attack Kaden’s Sirdar; Kaden and Nix respond but Cassidy prevails short of killing him. The story of how they set about each other’s mission (find his sister; find her target); and how they gained each other’s trust, and worked together to slay the Prime, apart from other destruction from the Casteless and infiltrators constitute the rest of the story. In all this he faces a conflict his duty to his Sirdar “Remember, Valens, remember your role, your duty. Do nothing to disgrace this Sector and the System that guides us.”; and his duty to his family “Blood is what binds us as family. ..Family comes before all, no matter what we’re sworn to do.”
This is a very well written book, with action, and twists at ae every turn. The clarity of writing keeps you turning the pages eagerly, and the fights are sometimes breath-taking, especially if the antagonist of protagonist is a Fury and can cloak himself/herself. The well-placed bombs and destruction by the Casteless assists the individual missions by reducing Sirdars’ possessions and causing general confusion in the Federacy. None of this is pre-detailed to the reader, and so gives a good impression of planning by the Casteless and their allies inside. Cassidy’s final disposal of Cath, the Prime, was the end game for the System (or so it seems). And you will find yourself supporting the efforts of the kids- Mercer (Twin) and Nix(Adept) in sabotaging the System’s plan.
