The author, a doctor, and her husband, a civil engineer specializing in water management, had each lived in remote areas of Asia. Simon takes up a two-year posting in a remote corner of lowland Nepal. Their first house, with no amenities, furniture or equipment, would have caused many women with a toddler and a baby to give up. It was some time before they achieved even a generator and a toilet. The biggest town for supplies was four hours away. But the local people welcomed them, and fell in love with the 'beautiful' baby.

I read this memoir on a family holiday at a lake in Southern Germany. Despite the beautiful surroundings outdoors I found myself wondering when we would return indoors so that I could contrive my trip back to Nepal through A Glimpse of Eternal Snows. The book begins with a montage of life in Rajapur at the foot of the Himalayas. The plush descriptions of the exotic life show take a reader on a trip alongside an English writer as she travels through a looking glass into a land of soft jasmine smells,temples, rice fields and jewel colored fruits. A place where scarlet birds come to sit at a windowsill while Buddhist chants from a nearby monastery ride the breeze into the writer's living room and the readers' imagination.

A little further into the book a visit to a hospital in Cambridge signals the emotional mystery that is truly the heart of the story. A mother gradually discovers the complications and abnormalities in her newborn baby. The two starkly different settings merge when the family decides to escape a life in England, which has become a series painful tests inflicted on the baby and pessimistic prognosis inflicted on the family. Western medicine and its authoritarian restrictions had begun to define the family's life completely. Together in Nepal the family had a chance to enjoy the time they had together. A Glimpse of Eternal Snows tells the story of the author's decision to come to terms with the fact that her newborn son would lead a brief life, but that quality of his life with his family was more important then the futile efforts to sustain an unliveable life in England. But the story is not a tragedy, it is a tale of how one makes decisions in spite of challenges and remonstrations of others. That is a universal experience lived or denied by most people, which is why this book can speak to an existential arm-chair traveller.

Nonetheless,perhaps A Glimpse of Eternal Snows speaks with greater depth to mothers of children with medical conditions or disabilities. These mothers constantly question themselves and hope they making the right decisions. In addition to the daily difficulties in dealing with a child's disability they face emotional adversity with friends, family, strangers in the street and the medical establishments who presume to know better. There is a loneliness to being a mother of a child with a disability, even within one's own family. After all, the final decisions will be yours. This book tells, without pity or tears, the honest difficulty of that situation. It shows how resilience, a rare combination of courage and coming to peace with your decisions, comes slowly, but it comes when you wake up every day and focus on what you must do and not what others believe you must do.
